Smart watches: real innovation still to come

Smart watches have created a lot of buzz recently, on the consumer side as well as with developers.

So it makes a lot of sense to have them on the developer playground – the most up-to-date devices as well as the people who can tell everything about them and give hands-on instructions.

Robert Virkus – Enough Software

One of those experts is Robert Virkus from Enough Software, whom we already mentioned Anyway, he believes that smart watches like Pebble, I’m watch, Agent etc. provide unique opportunities for developers. He also believes that it takes particular technical approaches to code watch faces, watch apps and connect a watch app with a smartphone app on the different platforms. And of course Robert will take those who are interested in this technology by the hand and share his expertise.in this blog.

He argues that technology is moving ever closer to humans and gets ever less visible on this way. But it seems clear to the expert that we are only on the first stage of an evolution towards wearable devices – watches, glasses, or even “smart hats”.

What we see today – disappointing battery life with smart watches and a trend to simply replace smartphones with watches, functionality-wise – is not very convincing yet and leaves a lot of space for real innovation, Robert opines.

He’s not the only one to speak about the new breed of timepieces. Sascha Pallenberg also promised to bring “smart watches galore” to the Developer Playground. The well-known German tech blogger, who lives in Taiwan and works all over the world, will be on CeBIT for his Mobile Geeks Techlounge live stream and share his insights and opinions with the Playground community.

By the way: We are curious what the experts will have to say about the most recent rumours regarding Samsung’s product strategy: sources close to the world’s biggest smartphone and mobile device manufacturer just leaked that the new Galaxy Gear smart watch will not run on Android, like all mobile Samsung devices, but on the Tizen platform it has been working on in the last two years.
